Stair nosing — the protective and visually defining profile installed at the front edge of each stair tread — is one of the few tile accessories that is regulated. Public-building codes across the EU, UK and most North American jurisdictions require visual contrast and slip-resistance at every stair edge. A specified aluminium stair-nosing profile delivers both at once.
Three duties the profile performs
First, mechanical protection. The front edge of a tiled stair tread is the most stress-loaded line in the entire installation. Without a metal nosing, ceramic edges chip; with one, the chipping problem disappears.
Second, slip-resistance. Stair-nosing profiles in our catalogue carry an integrated rubber or aluminium grip channel running along the visible nose, providing R10–R13 slip-rating performance even in wet conditions.
Third, accessibility. Most building codes require visual contrast at the leading edge of every tread to assist users with low vision. The contrasting colour of an anodised or powder-coated nosing satisfies that requirement without retrofitting.
Local terminology
In the German-speaking market the dominant search and specification term is Fliesen Treppenprofil. In Slovenian-language project documents the equivalent is Stopniščni profili za keramiko — literally "stair profiles for ceramic tiles". In other markets the family is searched under more general terms like "stair nosing", "step edge", "stair edge profile" or the local equivalent for stair trim. Aluprofilium ships the same profile geometry to all of them.
Specification basics
Tile-thickness compatibility (commonly 8, 10 or 12 mm tread tile), tread depth alignment, slip-grip type (rubber insert, knurled aluminium, carborundum strip), and finish (anodised, powder-coated to RAL, mirror, brushed). All four parameters need to be specified in any RFQ for the quotation to be meaningful.
Project example
A 220-room hotel renovation in Frankfurt specified our aluminium stair nosing in dark-bronze anodised finish across 14 stair flights — 110 m total profile length — delivered in protective sleeves with cut-to-tread-width pre-cuts. Send us your tread schedule and we'll return a per-flight quotation.
